What will she do?
Rainbow Ivy showed up determined one way or another to get Fiona to go with him. His patron expected him to deliver her to their client, and even if for the first time it bothered him, he would do it with or without Fiona's consent. Why it bothered him he didn't know. He was an experienced assassin and deliverer of goods, human or otherwise. For some reason he was breaking his cardinal rule of never getting involved emotionally with any "package". He cursed himself for feeling sorry for her. Her darn innocence was disturbing him. He had no idea why his patron's client wanted her, but after 4 years of searching he was darned if he was going to go back empty handed. Meeting her in the cemetery by chance the other night was a boon handed to him, and in his mind proved that in spite of his misgivings it was meant to be this way. Besides he needed the money that his patron was paying him on behalf of the person who had hired his services. This amount would guarantee he could retire, and nothing was going to stop him from his decision to do so. He was getting too old for this line of work, and all he desired was to settle down in Riverview and tend bees. Now the only question was, could he convince her to go without doing something drastic?
Rainbow Ivy sat to the side of Fiona. He could feel her discomfiture. He was an expert manipulator, but he was himself feeling a little uncomfortable himself truth be known. Fiona sat there waiting to see what he wanted. She was surprised after meeting him in the cemetery and not telling him where she lived that he had not only sought her out, but found her. This made her a little wary, but what choice did she have? Stay here? Her whole life changed after her mother died, and her father in his grief, killed himself 7 months before, but to have had Shrek's father show up and bring her here to Shrek's house, and then to find out that her father had "arranged a contract for her to marry Shrek." No, she would say it like it was. Her father had sold her to Shrek's dad in exchange for money to get her mother an operation, which was unsuccessful. To not tell her this, but leave it in his suicide was cruel. She loved and missed her dad, but she was extremely hurt by this. Then she just found out that she was expected to marry Shrek when she was 18, and due to her being a princess, another thing her parents never told for what reason she didn't know, was supposed to rule Ogrid (land of the ogres) along with Shrek. If she didn't marry him, Shrek's dad (who made the contract with the Ogrids, unbeknownst to Shrek at the time), would be killed and her fate would be uncertain, but however it turned out, the Ogrids would from what she was told, make her future less than pleasant. She could be at the whim of the next king, whoever takes the throne in Shrek's place, and she could be his mistress, sold as a slave, be put in a brothel or any number of unpleasant things. This is why she was willing to listen to Rainbow Ivy. She had known no one, been isolated in Shrek's house, beat up by some townspeople on her first trip out to escape the loneliness of being here, and with Shrek being surly and mean to her since she got here, she felt trapped. She had tried to like him, and reach him as they were in this situation through no fault or choice of their own, but he always seemed to resent her and she could take no more. Rainbow Ivy was her only hope of getting out of this place, and she hoped he would help her.
Meanwhile Shrek having tried to stop Fiona from talking to Rainbow Ivy to no avail being afraid of Rainbow Ivy, although he would never admit that, was sulking like a little child in the other room. He was angry, but knew that any more attempts to interfere would drive Fiona further away. It was true at first he was angry and resentful of Fiona being dumped on him by his father, and then being told out of the blue by his dad about the contract had enraged him, but after he had time to get used to things he found he had fallen in love with her. He had wanted to tell her and had been going to do so, but she had run away to his dad's house. His dad had called him and told him where she was, and he had rushed over there to find his father and Fiona locked in a passionate kiss!. He had rightfully exploded, and there was a bigger row than they had ever had. Maybe he shouldn't have reacted so badly, but to discover that you are in love, and to see the object of that love kissing your father had been too much. Since then, their "relationship" if you could call it that, had deteriorated even more if that were possible. He was infuriated that she had snuck out one night and had met this man. Shrek was certain that Rainbow Ivy was going to destroy everything. Even if he hadn't wanted to marry Fiona now of his own free will, the Ogrids were coming within 2 weeks to have them moved to Ogrid and set up in a royal palace until they could be married in just a year and a half. They show up and there is no Fiona things were going to get ugly. He sighed. What could he do? This Rainbow Ivy has given Fiona the idea she has power to decide her own fate. He could not control her anymore or force her to marry him now. This was not going to be good.
The tension in the room was palpable.
He wanted to put her at ease.
Rainbow Ivy clearing his throat: Fiona.
Fiona having been lost in thought was startled. She was scared, nervous, flustered and yet strangely excited all at once. She didn't know what to do. Should she trust this man? Should she ask for help? How could she not? Yet what did she know about him? She met him 3 nights ago and talked for an hour or two, and then he shows up out of the blue? She was torn between her common sense, and desperation. Well what could it hurt to hear him out?
Rainbow Ivy using his charm: Lovely Fiona, it was nothing but fate that brought you to me at the cemetery the other night. I knew when I first saw you that our paths were intertwined. We were connected and our paths were to be joined going forward Fate cannot be ignored. You see, I was very lonely, having just moved here, and my wife, who died recently had left me friendless and lonely. Then at the cemetery a young, pretty girl approached me in my grief and comforted me. I knew then that this was meant to be. I could see even then you were distressed and in some kind of trouble. I knew after you ran away I had to seek you out and help you. You do need help, don't you Fiona?
Fiona was shocked. She had been that transparent? Well what could anyone expect under the circumstances? She had been miserable for so long now, it had to show.
Fiona still though was hesitant. Why didn't she speak up and tell him everything? Why was she hesitating?
Rainbow Ivy reached over and took her hand: Fiona, believe me I mean you no harm, you don't have to be afraid. Let me help you.
Fiona: I-I-I don't know. I mean..... I... How can you help me?
Rainbow Ivy having seen the angry exchange between Shrek and Fiona just a few minutes before knew she disliked Shrek: Fiona, are you happy here? What I mean is, are you here because you want to be? The reason I am asking is you don't seem happy, and Shrek certainly seems like a uncouth beast. You certainly can't be happy here can you? A woman of your refinement could not be happy to be around that animal.
He wanted to put her at ease.

Fiona tears rolling down her cheeks let the whole story spill out. Rainbow Ivy sat there appalled as she talked. He knew that it couldn't be good, but even with his experiences, and jaded look at the world couldn't believe what he was hearing?. Having your father kill himself and finding out after he died you had been sold into a marriage contract to a man you never met, have to marry him and rule a land you didn't even know existed, was even by his standards archaic and wrong.
Rainbow Ivy clucking sympathetically: Oh my poor dear. I imagined the worst, but nothing I could have imagined could be as awful as the reality.
Fiona snuffling embarrassed: I am sorry I didn't mean to blubber like that.
Rainbow Ivy patted her hand soothingly: Believe you me, my dear, it is ok. I am stunned beyond words. I want you to know I can help you.
Fiona looked up her eyes sparkling with tears: You can?
Rainbow Ivy chuckled at her innocence lying glibly: Why of course I can. I know somebody back from where I come from who has a home for young girls such as yourself that offers you a place to stay and helps to get you on your feet so you can be independent.
Fiona looked down suddenly.
Rainbow Ivy looked at Fiona and saw she looked sad.
Rainbow Ivy gently: Hey now, what's wrong?
Fiona: I-I-I don't know. I guess I thought...... she stopped and sobbed uncontrollably. This wasn't what she expected at all. To leave here and go rely on the kindness of strangers, her being an ogre yet, she just didn't think it would work. Why should they be accepting of her? Every human except her father and Rainbow Ivy had been mean or didn't treat her good. Even her mother didn't seem to love her very much, as much as it hurt to admit it. How could she leave the only place where she in spite of the problems felt some sort of security? Yes, leaving with Rainbow Ivy had been her intention, but he made her feel it would be ok due to his concern and caring, and was willing to trust him, but him not a bunch of strangers. It looked like her last hope of escape was fading fast.
Rainbow Ivy realized she was scared: Fiona, I promise you that I will always be near you. I won't abandon you, I promise you that. Will you come with me?
Fiona was a little more reassured, but still she hesitated. Why? Why wasn't she upstairs packing her bags? What was holding her back? She didn't know, but she just couldn't bring herself to say yes.
Fiona hedging: I -I just don't know. To leave here and go to a place I don't know, I don't know if I can do that again. It was hard the first time.
Rainbow Ivy: Yes you came here as a stranger and didn't know anyone. Back there you will have me. I will be with you more than you think. I have no intention of abandoning you. Come with me, you certainly aren't happy here, things can only be better for you. If things don't work out, I will take care of you.
Fiona sat there not sure what to do. Rainbow Ivy looked at her, feeling her waffling emotions. It is true this was a horrible place for her, but yet it is the only place she has known for the last 7 months. She was reluctant to step out of her comfort zone. Or was it something else? He, having a good sense of people sensed something in Fiona, but couldn't quite put his finger on it. She was unhappy that was for sure, but there was something else warring in her, maybe even unknown to herself.
Rainbow Ivy afraid to let her think too long: Well what is your decision Fiona? I need an answer. Will you come with me?
Fiona: I am sorry Rainbow Ivy, I need more time. After the words were out of her mouth she was shocked. Did she just say that? What was wrong with her? Why didn't she just get away from here? She hadn't decided one way or the other, but she knew now that whatever it was keeping her here she had to know.
Rainbow Ivy was aghast: How could he have been stymied by this young snippet. He was getting angry. He offers her a way out of her miserable existence and still she hesitates? Well so be it. Let anything that happened here on be on her head. She was coming with him it seemed as his captive instead of a fellow traveler. This infuriated him, as he hadn't wanted it to be that way.
Rainbow Ivy stood up he had plans to make.
Rainbow Ivy controlled: I see. Well don't forget you had your chance to leave with me, but you have chosen not to do so. I feel sorry for you Fiona, I do.
Fiona distressed she had upset him it seemed.
Fiona: I am sorry Rainbow Ivy, believe me I am just as surprised and upset as you. I don't know why, but I can't leave yet. I want to so bad, but for some reason I can't.
Rainbow Ivy before walking out: I understand. I just hope you don't come to regret your decision.
Rainbow Ivy clucking sympathetically: Oh my poor dear. I imagined the worst, but nothing I could have imagined could be as awful as the reality.

With that Fiona walked to the door seeing her only chance of escape leaving and wanted to desperately call him back and tell him she would go, but the words would not come out of her mouth. As she watched him disappear she walked back into the house to Shrek, and an uncertain future.
