Interference
Barthus having heard that Rainbow Ivy had been at Shrek's house was concerned. That man hated his guts. He would do anything to destroy him and ogres. He had to find out more.
Barthus: You say Rainbow Ivy was here talking to Fiona?
Shrek: How many times must I repeat myself? I said he was.
Barthus worriedly: You say he might have been trying to get Fiona to go away with him?
Shrek impatiently: I don't know. I think so. She walked him out and stood there watching him walk away. I got the impression she was sad and wanted to leave with him.
Barthus: Does he know you are my son?
Shrek getting fed up: What is with the 20 questions? I don't know, and I don't care. If he does what does it matter?
Barthus: Son, there are things you don't know, and I can't explain, but promise me that you won't let that man anywhere near Fiona!
Shrek covering his eyes in frustration: You say you want me to not let that man around Fiona, but you can't tell me why? Fiona is her own woman. She can do what she wants at this point. I don't care. I can't take anymore.
Barthus was concerned. It seemed things couldn't get any worse. He had to protect Shrek from himself and Fiona from Rainbow Ivy. Not to mention the advance Ogrid party was coming within the next ten days to present Shrek and Fiona the key to the new castle. Shrek and Fiona had to appear to be in love, and convince the Ogrids they were. If they felt there was any trouble to upset the plans they could all be in trouble. All he had to do was stop Rainbow Ivy from upsetting all their plans, get Fiona in love with Shrek, and get Shrek to stop being his own worst enemy. A tall order, but he had to figure out a way.
Barthus thinking quickly: Shrek, my house needs to be fumigated for termites.
Shrek confused: First Rainbow Ivy and now termites? What was his dad trying to do? Dad get to the point. I am running out of patience.
Barthus: Well that is why I came over. You see, it is going to mean that I can not live in the house for at least a month. The infestation is really bad, and they will have to do at least 3 treatments. I came over to tell you. I hoped you wouldn't mind my staying here for the next month.
Shrek slapped his hand over his eyes again: Dad, seriously. This is not a good time as you can tell. Absolutely not! I can't take anymore. I am sorry, but you cannot stay here.
Barthus: I am sorry Shrek, I am going to go home and get my stuff. The Ogrids are coming within 10 days and we have a lot of work to do. I can't entertain them at my house, so we have to get yours ready.

Shrek: I can't believe this. Dad, this is unbelievable. Things like this don't happen except in comic books. This is real life. I can't deal with anything anymore. I just tried to choke the life out of Fiona who wanted to die by my hand. She will never love me, and I have to live with that. We must find a way out of this contract. If we find a replacement for me, surely they won't kill us.
Barthus: Son, a deal is a deal with the Ogrids. You are related to the current king. I told you he is your great uncle. You are a direct relation to him. I am only related by marriage. There is no one left of our line who can take over. They won't tolerate any breaking of the treaty. In fact they were pleased to know you existed as they wanted to keep the kingship in the family line. Your great uncle is a mean nasty ogre, but I assured them that you are nothing like him. The kingship has been in our family line for centuries and the Ogrids won't change that tradition as long as one of our line exists, and you dear son are it. You are the last. That is why you need to marry Fiona and carry on our proud name.
Shrek: Dad. Look, I will just explain it to them. I am sure they will realize after I explain it how ridiculous my being king would be. They surely couldn't want an Ogre, who knows nothing about state matters. For crying out loud dad, I can barely take care of Fiona, how am I going to be able to rule 10,000 ogres?

Shrek all of a sudden bowed his head: Dad, I want you to know, well I appreciate what you are trying to do, but you must forget about Fiona and me. I love her it is true, but there is no way she will ever feel the same about me. He looked up with a look of great sadness and shame.
Barthus couldn't believe his eyes. He had never seen Shrek so sad and defeated. If he didn't know Shrek better he would swear it was taking everything in Shrek not to cry.
Shrek quietly: It is no use dad. I am nothing but an ill tempered, blundering ogre, who will never find love. I never thought she would actually love me, as I am too ugly, and uncouth to think someone like her could love me, but I truly never wanted things to be like this. Oh maybe at first I was resentful, and you must admit I had good reason to be. You see dad, I resented having Fiona here, because well, I was afraid somehow that she would find a way into my closely guarded heart. Dad, I had accepted a long time ago that I would never be able to enjoy the love of a good woman. Every woman out there would run screaming in terror, or would look at me like I was some hideous monster. I told myself I didn't care, that I didn't need them or love. I was starting to be resigned to my lonely life. I closed off myself and my heart to stop the pain I felt inside. Then you brought Fiona, and I felt myself for the first time wanting companionship, and that terrified me. I knew that I didn't know how to love or be loved by anyone. I couldn't let her see my weaknesses. I couldn't let her make me care. I couldn't let myself care, as that would mean being hurt and rejected. I knew she could never love me, and so by holding her at arms length and hating her, it would mean I wouldn't hurt, but it all went wrong.
Barthus taking pity on Shrek: Son, I am so sorry. I not only made the agreement with the Ogrids for your future, but because I wanted you to find love. I saw how you were withdrawing from the world and how sad you were. I was hoping Fiona and you could find happiness. Nobody should have to be alone son. I just wanted you to find the happiness I had until your mother left.
Shrek striking out in his pain; Well your plan sure worked didn't it dad? I am now not only broken hearted, but debased and humiliated as well.
Barthus: I truly am sorry son, but we have to figure out plans for when the Ogrids come and how we are going to get you and Fiona together.
Shrek swore in his frustration: @#$%&^ Forget it dad! She hates me, and that is for the best. Stay out of my life. You have made a mess of everything. I may not have been happy before, but it sure beat this heartache and misery I have right now. Frankly the way Fiona and I feel right now death would be preferable to us both.
Barthus: Son don't say that. You both are young, and your hearts and relationship can be healed. You just have to try.

Barthus: Please son don't say that. Look, I will go get my stuff and then we will talk.
Shrek Whatever dad. You do what you are going to do, but I am no longer going along with it.
Barthus didn't want to leave, but he had to go get his things. He had to find a way to fix things an in less than 10 days. I will be back Shrek. Please just give this some thought. It can all work out.
Barthus walked away. Shrek watched him go.

Fiona hearing Barthus leave came downstairs. She was hungry.
Fiona was too tired right now to start anything. Shrek hearing Fiona come down turned to her with a scowl.
Fiona sighed. Didn't that man have anything but one attitude - nasty?

Fiona sighed. Didn't that man have anything but one attitude - nasty?
Shrek still feeling the sting of humiliation: What do you want? Did you come to gloat? After all your knight in shining armor came to your rescue.
Fiona ignored him.
Shrek: Barthus is moving in to try to get us together. Isn't that a hoot? Me marry you? I would rather die a slow painful death. He started to laugh hysterically. My father is a fool if he thinks we could ever think we could mean something to each other.
Fiona looked away sadly: What do I care? He can do what he wants, but he is dumber than I think if he thinks we could ever be married or that we could ever be in love.
Shrek: You are a cold hearted witch aren't you? I have never met such an evil, overbearing, drama queen as yourself. You don't have to worry I happen to agree with you. I have asked dad to find a way to get us out of the contract. If he don't, I will.
Fiona got angry as she felt sorry for this whole sorry mess, but mostly for herself. She couldn't help but think if things had been different could she and Shrek have lived happily ever after? She was young and like any young girl, she dreamed of her prince charming and starting a family. Would she ever find her prince? It didn't seem so. Why did Shrek have to be such an an an ,,,ogre? Somehow she felt abused and cheated.
Fiona ignored him.

Shrek: Fiona?
Fiona looked at Shrek. She had never heard that sad wistful tone in his voice before.
Shrek: Please will you answer one question for me?
Fiona tired of fighting decided to acquiesce. She nodded.
Shrek: Did Rainbow Ivy ask you to leave with him? Is that why he came here?
Fiona: Yes Shrek, but I told him no.
Shrek: Why?
Fiona: I don't know him Shrek, and frankly a familiar monster is better than an unknown one. He wanted to take me to another place where they have a place for women who need help such as myself, but I had to ask myself why would he want to help a complete stranger? Something just doesn't add up.
Shrek softly trying to make things better: I don't know this Rainbow Ivy Fiona, but I think he really has your best interests in mind. I think you should go. I demand that you go. I can offer you nothing. You would be better off. If you stay here you risk death. I cannot marry you. You go and I will face the Ogrids alone. Rainbow Ivy can protect you.
Fiona looked at Shrek. She had never heard that sad wistful tone in his voice before.

Fiona angry: Oh now you would throw me to the wolf! You know nothing about him, but are willing to let me go with him? You really do hate me don't you? You hoping he will dispose of a problem for you?
Shrek: Fiona, I don't care what you have to say. I am no longer asking. I am demanding you go.
Fiona: You can't make me go Shrek, I won't go.
Shrek angry now himself: You are right Fiona, I can't make you go, but if you don't go you will have no place to stay, because I am telling you that you can no longer stay in my house. I want you out of my house tomorrow.
Shrek walked away. He knew that to be kind he had to be mean. He had to let her go because he loved her and did not want to see her die. He might die, but he wasn't going to see her die especially at his hand. He regretted losing his temper and would not risk harming her again or letting the Ogrids harm her.
Fiona distressed: Shrek! Shrek! You can't do this. Shrek please! I won't let you do this. Shrek didn't answer. Fine! I will go live with Barthus. He will be glad to see me. He isn't an ugly ogre like you. Frankly I am glad to be leaving here.
Shrek turned around hurt: That is fine Fiona, go play the whore to my father. It is what you are good at after all. Just know I never want to see you again ever! Now get out of my face.
Fiona stricken and hurt stood there stunned. Did he just say that to her? He dared?
Shrek screamed: GO NOW SLUT! GET YOUR HIDEOUS FAT SELF OUT OF MY FACE. THE SIGHT OF YOU MAKES ME SICK!
Fiona ran up to her room hunger forgotten tears streaming down her cheeks. She would leave and good riddance. She didn't need to put up with him anymore. Why did he seem to be able to get under her skin? Why did his words hurt her? Pulling out her suitcase she began to pack. Nothing would get her to stay now. Nothing.
Shrek watched her run away the pain in his heart overwhelming him. He walked outside to where dragon was. He reached up and stroked her mane. Shrek's lips quivered. He wiped away the moisture from his eyes. He would not cry. He in fact hadn't cried since the day his mother left them. He believed that he had forgotten how to cry. The pain was too great. Overwhelmed with grief he grabbed Dragon's mane and pushed his face into her neck sobbing uncontrollably. He cried all the grief, pain, rage, loneliness and rejection came pouring out in the warm coarse hair of Dragon's mane, but sadly he felt no relief. It would take an ocean of tears to wash away all his grief and nobody has that many tears especially an ogre.
Shrek: Fiona, I don't care what you have to say. I am no longer asking. I am demanding you go.
Fiona: You can't make me go Shrek, I won't go.
