Machinations
Fiona filled with trepidation, but determined to help this man in his grief approached. She stopped unsure of what to do. Feeling anxious she fanned herself a little bit. Finally she walked up behind him and cleared her throat.
The man pretended not to hear her, wanting her to make the first contact.
Fiona: Pardon me sir. The man continued crying, but his sobs subsided some.
Fiona clearing her throat tried again. Boy this was awkward.
Fiona: Excuse me. I don't mean to intrude on a personal moment, but I.... unsure of how to proceed she fell silent.

The man turned around to face Fiona. He looked at her questioningly.
Fiona embarrassed looked away.
Fiona: I know you probably wondering why a stranger has interrupted you in a private moment, but I assure you that I only had intentions of helping. I just was distressed to see another fellow human being hurting. I, you see, I mean.... Fiona blushed. This man was looking at her making her feel stupid and foolish for thinking she could do something to help. After all if she were grieving for her father, nobody could do anything to help her. She cursed herself for being so stupid and impulsive.
The man finally opened his mouth: Please don't be embarrassed. I am glad you came to help. My name is Rainbow Ivy (Real name game gave him lol).
Fiona feeling out of place was anxious to make things right: My name is Fiona. I-I- am truly sorry. It just distressed me to see another human being grieving. I wanted...well at least I hoped that somehow I could ease your pain. I mean I know I can't take away your grief or anything.... I just - I don't know thought somehow if you knew someone cared or understood what you were going through.....it might.... Fiona's words faded away realizing she was babbling and making a fool out of herself.
Rainbow Ivy in spite of the situation felt some sorry for her. It wasn't her fault she was so young and inexperienced that was obvious. Taking pity on her he decided to alleviate her discomfiture.
Rainbow Ivy bowing: Ma'am you are a sight for these lonely sad eyes. If I had to be interrupted in my grief I could not have asked for a prettier rescuer.
Fiona looked around blushing: He couldn't be talking about her could he? After all she knew she wasn't pretty. Fiona squirmed inside wishing he wasn't being so chivalrous. She knew his compliment was insincere. He couldn't possibly think she was pretty.
Fiona: Thank you for trying to be so kind sir, but I know I am not someone pleasant to look upon. In fact I am amazed you didn't run screaming upon looking at this hideous visage of mine.
Rainbow Ivy now he had found her, didn't want her to go away and have nothing more to do with him. He had to reassure her.
Fiona embarrassed looked away.

Rainbow Ivy grabbed her hands: Please dear lady, don't say such things. Believe me I don't say things that aren't true. I am not a known flatterer. I can tell you have a kind heart, and I thank you for that. You have brightened my day.
Fiona wanted to pull her hands away not being used to anybody voluntarily touching her outside of Barthus, but he was an ogre like her. She felt doing so would be rude, and frankly she kind of liked it. She smiled uncomfortably.

Seeing how uncomfortable she was Rainbow Ivy let her hands go. He wished there was something he could do. He had to connect with her. He couldn't lose her. He had to keep her coming back until he could plan how he was going to proceed.
After he pulled his hands away Fiona felt relieved, but a little flat. She kind of felt that maybe he found her touch repulsive after all. Looking down she wondered what she could say.
Rainbow Ivy looking at her face saw uncertainty, sadness and embarrassment: I know you came to help me, but it seems to me you have troubles of your own. Would I be prying if I asked you if you would like to share with this old man? I have been a lot of places, and seen a lot of things, maybe there is something I could do to help.
He continued to watch Fiona's face. He could see fear, and uncertainty flashing across her face. He was an expert face reader after many years of performing his job which he was very good at. He could tell she was conflicted. He knew she was in trouble, and wanted to tell someone but her fear kept her from doing so.
Fiona feeling somehow that caution was the better part of valor right now lied: I-I don't know what you are talking about. I am perfectly happy. I have no troubles that you speak of. Everything couldn't be better. I do thank you for your concern though. In fact I must be going back. Thank you sir.
Rainbow Ivy frowned. For some reason she was beginning to distrust him or was it herself? He had to alleviate her distrust.
Rainbow Ivy: Please don't go yet. I feel so much better since you came. You see I lost my dear wife about a year ago, and life has been so empty and lonely since then. In fact that is why I came here. I felt I needed someone to talk to, so having no one else I came here to talk to her. We were married 30 years and she died all of a sudden. It has been so hard since she has been gone living all alone in that big house of mine. Some days I wonder why I go on. The only reason I think I am still here is because I know she wouldn't want me to end my life because of her. I wouldn't want to hurt her.
Fiona hearing his words felt pity for him. She felt exactly the same having lost her father and mother within a years time.
Fiona: I am so sorry sir. I know this will sound trite, but I know how you feel. Believe me when you say she wouldn't want you to be unhappy. I am glad that you have not killed yourself. You deserve to be happy. I hope somehow you can be happy.
Rainbow Ivy: Well you were an answer to a lonely, unhappy man's prayers. I was hoping someday to meet someone who would understand and be my friend. You will be my friend won't you?
Fiona blushing again: I - I don't think that would be possible. You see..... there Fiona stopped. What could she tell him? That she was engaged to be married to an ugly mean ogre, and was in a years time be a queen in a strange land? She wasn't even sure she truly believed that herself, and if she told this man he would think she was losing her marbles. After all this wasn't a day or age where women were sold into marriage like she was. He wouldn't understand.
Rainbow Ivy softly: Please Fiona. I really need a friend, and there is no one I would want more to be that friend than you. Won't you please be my friend?
Fiona: I can't. I am sorry. I got to go!
She started running toward donkey hoping he had rested enough. She knew being his friend was impossible. She couldn't just invite him for a tea at Shrek's house. Shrek wouldn't like her befriending this man and things with him were bad enough without risking angering him further. She desperately wanted to be his friend, but you can't be friends without talking ever. Coming here and talking to this man was a mistake. She would never venture out of the house again. She was suddenly afraid. Afraid of herself or what she didn't know.

Fiona got to donkey. Rainbow Ivy followed her.
Fiona was getting ready to mount in her haste forgetting to saddle donkey.
Rainbow Ivy: What is wrong Fiona? Please let me help.
Fiona climbed onto donkey and dug her heels into his sides. As she trotted off on donkey Rainbow Ivy yelled out I will be here everyday at 2 pm. Please don't disappoint me.
Fiona felt like crying. Why couldn't life be normal? Why should having a friend lead to complications and problems? She wanted to cry. Well he might be there, but he would be there alone. She was determined not to go back.
Rainbow Ivy watched her ride away. Now that he had found her it wouldn't be too hard to find out where she lived. He had been hired by his patron to find her, and he had spent the last 4 years looking for her. He didn't know why his patron wanted her found. In his job you didn't ask questions it was dangerous to do so. He would have to contact his patron and find out what he was to do now he had found her. He smiled thinking of the money that would be his reward. He just hoped that the money would be paid promptly and that it would not become blood money. He had killed in the past, and he had no compunction about doing it, but He didn't enjoy it. Well whatever he had to do he would do. That was his job and if there was one thing that could be said about him was that he was very good at it. With that he walked away wondering why he all of a sudden seemed to be squeamish. This would not do, no, not do at all.
