Promises, Promises
Later that evening Fiona went to bed and had a most restful sleep in the first time since coming to this house. She slept the sleep of the dead.
Fiona was dreaming of her father getting her out of this situation. She knew he would. He wouldn't have put her here if he had known how bad it was, she was convinced of it.
Shayne had come back in response to his daughter's pleas for help. He knew he could only try to bring her comfort. Being a spirit there was nothing he could do for her. He knew when he signed that contract with Shrek's father it was wrong, but he would have done anything to save his wife's life.
Fiona in her sleep: Yes daddy, I want to leave. I don't want to take anything with me. Just take me away.
Shayne softly: I am sorry Fiona that you are so unhappy. I had to sell you to Shrek's dad in order to try to save your mother's life. She would have died for sure without that operation. Besides your mother and I always talked about your future and what would happen to you if we died. There was no other option sweet pea. If we would have died leaving you alone and uncared for, you wouldn't have survived. The only way I felt that you had a chance at happiness was to arrange a marriage for you. Your mother and I although we loved you and thought you beautiful, knew the world being cruel would never accept you. We hated the thought of you being alone, rejected and despised. We didn't want you to have the pain of a broken heart.
Fiona mumbling in her sleep as if in response to Shayne: Yes daddy, I understand. I love you.

Shayne whispering urgently: Fiona my time here is short. Before I go, I want to say a few things. I hope that somehow you can hear me. I hope you never find out that I sold you, but if you do, I want you to know I do not regret making sure you have a secure future. The world my daughter is a cold cruel place and you are where you need to be. Shrek is of your kind. He may not see it now, but in time he may do so. You two being blind because of your unhappiness do not realize that you belong together bound by your mutual pain and rejection by people. Daughter your future and the happiness of that future lies in your hands. Reach for the stars my daughter to get the sun and the moon as well. Goodbye my one and only beloved daughter. I must go once again to be with your mother. She loves you as well. We think of you often and have planned for the day we will be together forever walking hand in hand and heart to heart. I will come back to see you when I can daughter I promise.
Before disappearing Shayne went to the verandah to see the man who was responsible for his daughter's future. Shayne watched Shrek wolf down a bowl of stew with relish slightly repulsed. Dear heaven is this the barbarian his daughter was to be yoked too?
Shayne: I know you can't hear me Shrek, but I want to tell you that if you don't start treating my daughter well, I will come from the pits of hell if necessary to haunt you and torture you until the day you die. With that warning floating on empty air, Shayne sighed and floated away.
Shrek finished his meal and shivered. That was strange. He had felt a cold chill settle over him for a few seconds. He couldn't explain it, but while he had been eating, he could have sworn he was being watched. He knew it was ridiculous as Fiona had already retired for the night, but he couldn't shake the feeling. Shrek feeling uneasy walked into the house.
A few days later not being able to shake that feeling of uneasiness Shrek approached Fiona.
Shrek: Fiona, I don't know how to say this, but two nights ago when you said you heard your father playing the piano, I didn't believe you. But that same night, I had the impression while I was eating that someone was watching me, and I felt a presence of like anger. I never believed in dead people coming back from the dead, but now I am not so sure that your father wasn't here.
Fiona: I told you father had been here and he is going to help me. I know he will take me away from you and this horrible place.
Shrek stung by her harsh words struck back: Well it hasn't been a picnic having you here disrupting my happy home. You have been an imposition from the day you came. I don't want to marry you in a year and half when you turn 18 any more than you want to marry me.
Fiona: Well I am glad to see we agree on something.

Fiona: You think that just because you gave me a nice place to live I should be grateful to you. I have tried over the past six months to get along, but you have rebuffed my every attempts. If I had someone to go I would be gone yesterday. As it is I am biding my time until daddy finds a way to get me out of here.
Shrek sighing: Look Fiona, your father is dead. There is nothing he can do and you need to accept that. We are stuck with each other, and I have decided to make the best of things, and maybe it is time you realize that as well.

Fiona: Never. I have hated you from the day I came here, and I did try to make things more tolerable at first. I wanted to make a bad situation not so bad, and I tried. You ignored me. Now I want nothing to do with you. I hate you Shrek. You are nothing but a low down, dirty, disgusting, mean, ugly, deformed ogre and I can't wait until the day I am free of you.
Shrek was taken aback at her vehemence.
Shrek angry: Fine! Go I don't care. Once you leave my dear Fiona, I want you to know that no matter what happens to you, my door will be closed to you forever!

Fiona: That is perfect, as once I leave I never want to come back. I will live on the street a beggar before I ever come back here I promise you that!
Shrek with a parting shot: Well if that is the worst that will happen to you, you will be fortunate indeed. There are things in this town that you have no idea about. So go ahead and leave by all means. I promise you though that you will be sorry. Sorrier than you have ever been in your life. That is not a threat Fiona, but a promise.
