More Complications?
Barthus in spite of his threatening to find Fiona and marry her himself knew that the Ogrids would not accept him as a substitute. They wanted Shrek because he was young, and had never been married before. He didn't know why it was required that the future king must not be married more than once. He didn't know why it was so, but that is the way it had always been. Why was his son so bull headed and irascible? Hadn't he done Shrek a favor setting him up with lovely Fiona? What ogre wouldn't have killed to have her as a bride? He got him set up as the future king of Ogrid an honor not lightly bestowed on anyone. He had to call in more than a few favors from higher officials to get Shrek appointed future king. Didn't he realize he would be set for life in a cushy palace wielding great power with a beautiful, gracious wife who would love him in spite of his faults? He knew first hand how much love Fiona had in her. After all hadn't he kissed her and saw the love for him in her eyes? He wished whole heartedly that it was him she was marrying as much as he didn't wish to be king of Ogrid. He had cared about her from the first when he had come to pick her up and take her to Shrek's house. She had been so young, forlorn and innocent. He had wanted to take her home to his house and tell her he had feelings for her. He had known her since she was a young child, and he had seen her grow up into a beautiful ogre. He gave up his lovely Fiona to give his son a bright future and this is what it had led too? He would gladly rip that contract up if it were possible. Oh how he kicked himself now. If he hadn't signed that contract, Fiona and he would be happily married with children on the way. What had he got for his sacrifice? A death sentence, a son who hated him and heartache.
After a day of kicking himself and cursing Shrek in every way possible, he decided that he needed to make amends to get them out of this pickle they were in. Alienating Shrek wouldn't help find Fiona. They needed to band together and figure out a way to get her back. In about a week the Ogrid council would be arriving to give them the key to their new Palace home, and if Shrek and Fiona were not here to show suitable gratefulness, and unity, the Ogrids could be apt to tear up the contract, and exact the provisions of failing to live up to it. He tugged at his shirt collar nervously. He sort of liked his head where it currently resided, and would do anything to make sure he kept his in tact. That is why he came back to Shrek's house looking to reason with him. To his surprise Shrek was no where around. Now he was annoyed. Where could he be? Did he go look for Fiona? Was he somewhere around town? This was no time for Shrek to disappear without word. Good heavens that boy was determined to get them killed. What should he do? He tried to call Shrek, but no answer. His phone must be off. Cursing Shrek roundly again he hung up the phone and stood there nervously, wondering if he should wait or what? If he waited time was slipping away. He couldn't go off and look for Fiona even if he wanted to

Barthus was undecided and before he could decide on a course of action his phone rang.
Barthus: Hello?
Hi, Barthus, this is Jonelle.
Barthus started sweating. It was the state minister of Ogrid.
Barthus: Yes your honor. How may I serve you?
Jonelle: Some rumors have come to our attention that there is some problem.
Barthus's voice squeaking in nervousness: Uh, problem sir? What problem would that be? You know we are eagerly looking forward to seeing you and the council next week. Fiona is especially excited.
Jonelle: Don't toy with me Barthus. We have heard that Fiona has gone missing. Is that true?

Barthus thinking how could he have known about this?
Barthus: I want to assure your eminence, that a week from tomorrow, you will be personally handing the key to Shrek and his lovely fiancée Fiona. They both are excited, and can't wait to start their new life. What time are we to expect your honor?
Jonelle: Don't try to buffalo me Barthus. I want to speak to Shrek now!
Barthus trying not to panic: There is nothing I would like better your eminence, but ummm he desperately sought an excuse. Maybe he could change his voice and imitate Shrek. No, as when he met Shrek he would know what he did, and the state minister wielded great power to punish him for deception. By the time he got done with him he could be convicted of treason, and his end would be ensured. I must apologize your honor, but my son seems to have stepped out and I don't know where he is.
Jonelle: Well give me his number so I can contact him myself then. It is against protocol, but I think this once it will be ok under the circumstances don't you?
Barthus scrambling and stammering: No... I mean that won't be possible.
Jonelle hissing like an enraged snake: You dare say no to me?

,Barthus: I - wel.. His mind racing frantically trying to think up something, anything.
Jonelle quietly dangerous: I want that number yesterday Barthus.
Barthus: There is nothing that would give me greater pleasure your honor, but you see.....
Jonelle: Is the reason you won't give me the number because Fiona is missing, and Shrek is gone out to get her? Are you confirming that the rumors are true?
Barthus: NO, NO, NO, I assure your eminence. You know I would not lie to you. Shrek is fine, and Fiona is out with Shrek right now buying stuff for her trousseau. The reason I can't give you the number is that he has been bothered by phone calls from his future subjects requesting favors, and so he has gotten rid of his phone.
Jonelle: That was really stupid of him wasn't it? Well let me assure you that I will follow up on this. Shrek has 1 day, 24 hours to call me at this number, or I will come looking for you both, and have you up in front of the council for treason, and breach of contract unless of course, you can produce Fiona at that time

Barthus: I understand your honor. I apologize they aren't available at your beck and call. Please don't hold this against us. I promise you all is ok. Shrek will call you as soon as he comes home.
Barthus: Yes your eminence, I understand. Thank you for understanding.
Barthus hung up the phone. He swore he lost 10 lbs of water weight. His clothes were soaking wet from all the sweating he had done. What was he going to do? What if Shrek had gone after Fiona? Well he had always wanted to trim a few pounds, but not this way. Curse his son. With that he picked up his phone again and put Shrek's number on speed dial. He had to pick up sometime and he would keep dialing until he did. In the meantime he best ask around town if anybody had seen his son. What had his son done to him? Why did these things always happen to him?

Meanwhile in a remote place....
This is going exactly according to plan. Rainbow ivy will be here soon with the lovely Fiona.
Barthus and Shrek who will be unable to produce the lovely Fiona will meet an untimely death. You will produce the lovely Fiona being the hero who rescued their future queen and in their gratitude the Ogrids will crown you king.
Jonelle: Yes, Deryck, your plan is brilliant. I will be king, and you will be my minister of state who will be gifted the lands and property of the traitorous dogs Shrek and Barthus. You see, I reward my loyal subjects handsomely, but know this Deryck, as generous as I can be to those who obey me, I can be just as ruthless against my enemies. Never forget that Deryck. You are not indispensable. You may be my brother, but blood means nothing to me. Loyalty and obedience is the only thing I require and as long as you remember your place, you may just make something of yourself.
Jonelle tapped his brother lightly on the cheek laughing as he walked away. Yes, in fact maybe he would show mercy to Shrek and Barthus in exchange for some favors. People who fear for their lives tended to make good obedient slaves. He would enjoy seeing them abased and humiliated. Then again he would enjoy seeing them suffer a slow and painful death. Nothing like having some enjoyable entertainment while he ate. Yes maybe he would throw a feast, and the death of Shrek and Barthus would be the main entertainment. It wouldn't do to let his subjects get the idea he was weak. No, indeed it wouldn't. They would find out what kind of king he could be. Smiling at the thought of the terror and the groveling of people at his feet, he whistled cheerfully. Maybe he should get in some practice. Yes, some practice would definitely be a good idea.
Jonelle walked into his chambers thinking of the coming evening. It would be a pleasant one indeed.
Jonelle: Arywnn, come here. I have need of you.
