The Journey Continues
Rainbow Ivy and Fiona had been travelling all night and into the morning. He wanted to get as far as he could before they stopped. He wasn't in familiar territory here and didn't want any interference from the townspeople. He was sure they could get through the town if Fiona would just pick up the pace. He had thought he had made it clear to her that any dilly dallying would not be tolerated.
Rainbow Ivy: I have been gracious to let you walk under your own power, and I have shown you the consequences of not walking quickly. Do we need another lesson?
He was referring to when he had dragged her by the hair along the ground. He could put her on Dragon, but he did not trust her to not try something, and he could keep a better eye on her from here. She was deliberately stalling and he would not let it continue. He was, he supposed getting soft in his waning years, as she would have already had another lesson. He needed to stop feeling sorry for her.
Fiona was tired and dispirited. Her feet were screaming in agony and she just knew she had to find the strength to get away. She didn't say anything to Rainbow Ivy. She didn't want to antagonize him. She sighed and tried to stumble a little bit faster, but she was just about done in. She couldn't help it; she stopped. She just needed to rest a minute.
Rainbow Ivy growled menacingly, and reached down as if to grab her hair. She was too tired to even feel afraid of him.
Rainbow Ivy sighed. It looked like she had reached her limit. He held out his hand and ordered her up in front of him.
Rainbow Ivy: Just be warned, this is not a kindness, but your being dragged by the horse slows me down too much. So I am allowing you to ride with me, but any funny business, and you will get worse than being dragged by the hair do I make myself clear?
Fiona's skin crawled at the thought of sitting in front of him, and she hesitated to take his hand. Rainbow Ivy impatient at her not obeying him, gave her a vicious kick in the head with his boot. She screamed and fell down on the ground.
Rainbow Ivy holding out his hand: Now get up here, immediately!
Fiona dazed and in pain tried to struggle to her feet. She was feeling slightly dizzy and she couldn't see well. Still, somehow she managed to grab his hand, and he pulled her up.
Fiona sat there, the world whirling around her. Rainbow Ivy kicked Dragon in the side and got her to trot. The jolting of the horse made Fiona feel sick and she leaned over and was violently ill, but she had nothing in her stomach as she had nothing in her since yesterday after dinner. Had it only been since yesterday he had taken her from her warm bed? She felt they had been on the road forever. As much as she hated Shrek, even the thought of being back there with him was looking more and more palatable. Rainbow Ivy jerked her upright.
Rainbow Ivy: You are trying something and you better not do it again. He thought she was trying somehow to unseat him or throw Dragon off her gait. He wouldn't admit it, but he was anything but an expert horse rider. It wouldn't take much to unseat him. Normally this would have caused her to protest vehemently as it was the furthest thing from the truth, but she was too ill to do or say anything. Any more funny business and you will pay. Do you understand me?
Fiona didn't respond. She couldn't, as she had passed out, and was for the first time in blissful peace unaware of her throbbing feet, the jolting of the horse, the pain in her head or the fear of the man holding her.
Rainbow Ivy realizing she had passed out smiled. Now they would get somewhere. Why hadn't he thought of doing this before? He smiled ruefully, yep he sure was getting soft in his old age. He would have to rectify this, as in his profession things like this could get him killed. Yep, he would have to watch his penchant for being too nice as he had no intention of dying for a very long time.
Rainbow Ivy knew that if Fiona wasn't in his patron's hands within the next week he wouldn't have to worry about reforming. In spite of his misgivings of having Fiona rriding with him, he might not have any choice. Besides he had just wanted to teach her to be afraid of him and make her submissive and keep her off balance. Rainbow Ivy was some worried as he had thought when he had turned to offer his hand to Fiona he had seen someone in the trees in the distance. Who was it? Had they been following all along? Did they know who he was or who Fiona was? Had his patron sent someone to spy on him? What did this person want? Well all he could do for now is keep going as he was already behind schedule. He would have to pick up the pace and see if he could lose them. At least they were on foot and he was on Dragon, but if his patron sent them it was then it was a sure bet he would have hired someone who could keep up with a team of fleet horses on foot or not. Well he would bide his time and keep on his toes. This was an assignment he sure was starting to regret. Unfortunately it wouldn't be the only one as there had been others. He started thinking maybe retiring would be safer, but in this job if you tried to retire it was of a permanent nature your patron would see to that. Sigh. Rainbow Ivy kicked Dragon, best thing is to keep going and drop off Fona after that. What happened to her then would be of no concern to him. That is if he made it there. With that thought he shuddered and kicked Dragon into a full on gallop. He clung on to Fiona and Dragon for dear life and hoped that his end wouldn't come disgracefully by being thrown from a horse.
