Decisions, decisions
Last we left our lovely Fiona, she had another blow up with Shrek. Shrek having caused a breach between them from day one of her moving in, and in spite of finding Fiona and his father kissing, decided loving her that he wanted to try to win her heart. He approached her with a proposal to go away somewhere, but Fiona not enamored of Shrek and being in love with his father didn't take to it to well. Shrek then decided she would have to make amends with him, and that is where the situation stands. Both were miserable, hurting and stubborn.
It has been two weeks and Fiona's birthday is tomorrow and she was turning 17. This impasse with Shrek, missing Barthus, and the fact her birthday was tomorrow made her miserable. How she wished her life was the way it used to be. The fact she was going to be 17 made her miss her father even more. Would she ever stop missing him? It had been 8 months since his passing, and she was as lonely and missed him just as much as the day he died. 17 to her was being on the threshold of adulthood. Not yet an adult, but no longer a little girl. She was like a caterpillar about to burst forth from its cocoon into a beautiful butterfly, but sadly Fiona felt neither beautiful or free. She knew she had some decisions to make. This whole marriage thing with Shrek filled her with loathing and disgust. To think of him sharing her bed, touching her and having his babies, repulsed her to no end. Yet she thought of what Shrek had told her about what would happen if they didn't marry. She knew she wasn't pretty, and feared that the king could do anything to her even throwing her in prison for life. That fact didn't fill her with fear, as living with Shrek she was in a prison, and if she married him it would be for life, so if that is all she had to worry about, she could, and did prefer that, but the thought of her beloved Barthus being killed because of her, she could not stand that thought. Would they make her watch? As much as she hated Shrek, even she wouldn't want to be the cause of his death either.
Fiona: So you see donkey living with Shrek is bugging me, and I have to get away. I think if I can go somewhere away from here and think, I can hopefully solve my problems. Will you let me ride you? I don't dare walk the streets after what the townspeople did to me, but you being so fast, I think I don't have anything to fear.
Donkey: I am game, but no trips to water. I hate water, water is evil. Shrek one time rode donkey out after a flood to check on Shrek's father, and donkey maintained he almost drowned. In reality, although the water was up to the top of his legs, he had tripped and they both had fallen into the water. Donkey had panicked, and it was only at Shrek's beating donkey to get him to calm down, that saved him. Now outside of drinking water, donkey wouldn't step in a puddle unless absolutely necessary, and he would shudder so hard that a few times he almost threw Shrek which angered Shrek and again got him undeserved beatings.

Fiona seeing that donkey didn't object mounted him.
Donkey thinking: I hope that I will be coming home to see dragon again.

The sun was beginning to set as they took off. Fiona for the first time was feeling like a heavy load was lifting from her heart. She could actually breath and felt the wonderful feeling of being free. The thought she would have to go back clouded her face for a moment, but she pushed that thought aside. She was free, and was going to think of nothing else but being free even if for a short time. The streets were empty, and the clomp, clomp of donkey's hooves on the pavement soothed her. She could ride like this forever. Where she was going she had no clue, but to feel the light breeze on her face, and the relaxing motion of donkey's gait was allowing her to just put all her worries and troubles aside, and just enjoy the ride.
Fiona was lulled into a trance and didn't realize how long she had been out, or that it was dark. Donkey stumbled tired and wanting to go home, which jolted Fiona out of her reverie. She looked around surprised that night was so far along. She sighed. She knew donkey was tired, but she just couldn't go back yet. She hadn't been so relaxed in what seemed years. Had it really only been 8 months? She patted donkey.
Fiona: Poor boy, I know you are tired, but just a little while longer. As if in response donkey picked up his gait a little bit. Thank you donkey.
Meanwhile back at the house:

Shrek called his dad to give him an update on the situation.
Shrek: No, I haven't talked to her about the new house. I know I didn't expect the Ogrids wanting us to move their before I was crowned.
Barthus: Believe me when the representatives of Ogrid stopped by with this official proclamation from the Ogrid body, about the house I couldn't believe it either. I thought you would have told her already. I informed you a week ago. Why haven't you told her? .
Shrek: Geesh dad, I don't know. I mean we get along so well, practically like happy young people in love. If it got any more lovey dovey around here, I wouldn't be able to stand it.
Barthus: Ok I get it. You need to tell her. The Ogrids want this move to be done in the next month. No delays. I wouldn't want them to feel their most generous offer was not appreciated. If I refused this would be considered a great insult, and I couldn't tell you what the consequences would be. It could create an international incident.
Shrek rolling eyes: Come on Dad. Aren't you being a little ridiculous?
Barthus: The high grand councilor himself came on a litter to present me with the key. The grand high councilor does not usually come in person bearing anything even gifts. He wanted to present it to you and Fiona in person, and it was with the greatest finesse and difficulty I talked him out of it. I could tell he wasn't pleased, but he was willing to let it go, only after I promised him that we would have a big presentation ceremony in Ogrid where he would present the house to you in person. He was over the moon at the prospect of a big ceremony. Nothing a big ham like him enjoys more than power is showing his power. He couldn't wait to finish the protocols of his official visit to start back home and get his people to start planning it. Once of course you are officially crowned king, you will stay in the house until they can redo the palace.
Shrek: Dad! Are you nuts? You lunatic! You have to call this off.

Shrek: What is that? The high councilors daughter is going to sing at the ceremony as well? Oh great. Shrek thinks he at this point would have better luck throwing himself off a cliff and landing on his feet unharmed than getting Fiona to agree to this.
Barthus: Oh one more thing. Shrek listened, turning darker shades of green, red and purple as his father continued speaking. He couldn't trust himself to speak
Shrek trying not to throw the phone in the toilet and run over to his dad's house to strangle him: You did what !?
Barthus: I convinced them since they wanted you to move in to the house as soon as possible, now that Fiona will be 17, to move up the marriage. I must admit that at first the high councilor wasn't too sure, but when I told him what a public relations win it would be for him, he agreed. The wedding will be exactly two months from now, and the coronation two weeks after that. That will give you two time to work out any "ahem" roadblocks if you know what I mean.
Shrek: That is just great dad. I have known Fiona 8 months, and she hates my guts. Now I have to tell her in one month we will be having a ceremony to gift us a new house in Ogrid, and our happy nuptials will be one month after that? Forget it dad. I need more time to win her over.
Barthus: Well you better get cracking then, because come hell or high water you two will be man and wife in two months time or you can say good bye to our heads.
Shrek angry hung up: Ugh his dad was impossible. How was he going to tell Fiona the "happy" news? He didn't know, but he had to find a way.
Shrek: Fiona! Fiona! We have to talk. I have something to tell you.
There was no reply irritated Shrek went looking for her. To his horror he realized that not only was Fiona gone, but donkey as well. Where could she have gone? Why did she leave? Was she coming back? Shrek in a panic. What if she didn't come back? Oh dear heaven, this was a catastrophe. If she didn't come back, how was he going to tell his dad? Worse yet, how was his dad going to explain it to the high councilor without getting them both killed?
He knew the answer to that, and that is why Fiona had to come back, she just had to.
