Trouble?
After Fiona left to go upstairs the fight between Shrek and his dad continued. Two ogres in a fight could go on for an hour or more, but when one was in overdrive anger, who knows how long it could go on for? There was a legend that the great king Gruner, an ogre fought his brother in a life and death battle and it lasted 3 days.
Barthus: Shrek! Shrek! It is your father. Calm down. Please stop this fighting!
Shrek wasn't hearing anything. He was swamped with an anger that was consuming him. The anger of being put in a contract he didn't consent to, having to put up with Fiona against his will, his father always taking everyone else's side including Fiona's, his father's betrayal kissing Fiona, Fiona's hating him for no good reason and the thing that made him the angriest of all was his impotence in making Fiona love him, and his inability to control the situation anymore. He was raging angry at his father, Fiona for not loving him, Rainbow Ivy for what he represented - hope for Fiona to have her own life without him, and himself for loving her.
Barthus grabbed Shrek by the neck and threw him to the ground climbing on top of his back to pin him down: Stop it son! Stop it. It is time to stop fighting!
Finally with his rage subsiding in the joy of the fight he heard his father's words. Maybe his father was right. Maybe it was time to stop fighting. The problem was even if he wanted to let Fiona go, it was that blasted contract that made that impossible. He had to continue to try. Maybe there was another way, but what?
Barthus felt Shrek slowly relax, and got off of him,
Barthus sternly: What possessed you Shrek? Killing the one person who holds our lives in her hands are you insane?
Shrek feeling his rage creeping back up turned away and took a few deep breaths: Dad, lay off! You don't know what I have been through.
Barthus: Shrek, I don't care what happened. All I know is you were an idiot for choking Fiona. What has that girl ever done to you? She has only tried to make the best of a bad situation and you were determined to be stubborn and contrary just because you can be. If you would have met Fiona even a 1/4 of the way, we wouldn't be a week away from the council coming to present this new house, and no hope of a marriage proposal in sight. Do you want to die Shrek? Do you have a death wish? Well if you do, that is your problem, but you have no right to condemn me to the same fate. I don't want to die, and it is unfair of you to have made this situation what it is.
Shrek was taken aback and stunned. Did his father just say those words? The man who started this whole mess was blaming him and chastising him?

Shrek balled up his fists to restrain himself.
Shrek: I am going to try to stay calm, as this fighting is getting us nowhere.
Barthus: Thank you son I appreciate your effort and am glad to see have come to your senses.
Shrek leaned in close menacingly: I am going to stay calm, but if you EVER! say this whole mess is my fault again, I will rip you limb from limb father or not. Do I make myself clear?
Barthus was taken aback at the anger emanating from Shrek. What was his problem? What had he done? He arranged a good life for his son with an attractive ogress, a life of luxury and ease, and this is the thanks he gets? It wasn't his fault Shrek mistreated Fiona was it? No, it wasn't.
Barthus just to appease Shrek: Well I won't say it, but it won't change the facts you know. You have to find a way to win her over, no matter what you have to do. She has to marry you. And for heaven's sake don't ever put your hands on her again. I know Fiona didn't deserve it, and you had no right to attack her without provocation.

Shrek reached out and slapped his dad. It was that or he would kill him.
Barthus: What was that for?
Shrek gritted his teeth: For being an awful father who never thinks of his son, and doesn't trust or believe in that son. Why did you have me if you hate me so much?
Barthus was shocked: I don't hate you son. I love you, but you just can be impossible sometimes and Fiona does deserve better.
Shrek: Oh really? Fiona, sweet, innocent Fiona? He snorted. Do you know she goaded me to purposely anger me? She wanted me to kill her. I tried to stop her, tried to walk away, but she was relentless. She wouldn't let me leave. She is not the angel you make her out to be you know. You don't have to live with her. You don't see how mean, and horrible she can be.
Barthus: I know this is not a good situation Shrek, and that is because of the choices you have made, but you can start building bridges. It won't be easy, but our lives depend on it. If Fiona leaves, we will be killed and unable to protect her. The Ogrids won't stop until they find her, and punish her. I tell you this Ogrids are ruthless if their plans are thwarted.
Shrek beyond caring what happened just shrugged. Let them come. I can't have the woman I love, and my father blames me for everything. Life isn't worth living anyhow. I am sorry dad, but maybe it is better this way.
Barthus started to panic: Son, love is worth fighting for. If you love Fiona, fight for her! It isn't too late.
Shrek feeling the anger leave and a fateful resignation overtake him: No dad. I can't do it anymore. In fact I am going to tell her to contact Rainbow Ivy, and have him take her away. She isn't happy here and never can be. Maybe she can get him to help her find her own life apart from me. That is the greatest kindness I can do for her.
Barthus got a look of horror on his face: Rainbow Ivy? Did you say Rainbow Ivy? How did you meet this man?
Shrek lost in defeat and feeling sorry for himself didn't notice the edge in his father's voice or see the look on his face: I don't know Fiona must have snuck out one night and met him somehow. He came to the house, and Fiona and I had a big fight about him right in front of him. I think he was trying to convince her to leave with him, but I am not sure. She didn't go, but I think she should.
Barthus was really upset. Rainbow Ivy was a man from his past he hoped never to meet again. This man thought Barthus had wronged him when his wife came on to Barthus and he being married at the time rejected her advances. Rainbow Ivy's wife had killed herself a few months later leaving a note and the reason for killing herself blaming Barthus for her unhappiness. Rainbow Ivy vowed vengeance and he had gotten in when he stole Shrek's mother and his wife away from them. He waged a campaign to win his human wife from him and was successful. He had no choice to let her go, as much as it hurt he hoped that would be enough for Rainbow Ivy, but it seems it wasn't. How did he find out about Fiona being engaged to Shrek? What was his plans? If his personal vendetta wasn't enough it was rumored that Rainbow Ivy from that day forward hated ogres and would do anything to destroy their lives even murder them. This couldn't be any worse. Fiona couldn't go with that man. If Shrek was right they were all in far worse danger than anything the Ogrids would do to them. To Rainbow Ivy death would be too good for them. He shuddered and wondered what he could do to stop whatever plans Rainbow Ivy had for Fiona. He just hoped it wasn't too late. Heaven help them. This wasn't good, not good at all.
