Uncertain Future
Fiona should be happy. She just moved into a spacious home richly decorated with every imaginable luxury including a coveted Steinway piano and Donkey and P uss.
It all began with her birth. Her parents were two normal people who had an aberration for a child. Too late they discovered that her mother carried a recessive gene that caused their child as they grew older to be disfigured. Fiona was born green, and had a weight problem. The doctor said she would always be overweight, and as she grew older she would probably become more disfigured.
Fiona had a lonely childhood, but her parents lavished her with everything her heart desired to compensate her for the cruelty of the kids who shunned and taunted her cruelly. Fiona's parents never made her feel ugly, but she knew she was and hated herself for it. If it wasn't for her parents she couldn't have borne it. She always told her parents that they would have to live forever, as nobody could love her except for them. They would tell her that wasn't true, but the mirror told her the cold hard truth. She knew nobody would want her. How could they? She knew that if she was a guy, she wouldn't want her either. Well as long as she had mom and dad everything was good.
One day Fiona's safe, comfortable world would come to an end. Fiona's dad made a lot of bad investments to make the money needed to keep his darling daughter happy, and found himself broke. This in itself wasn't enough to cause her undue distress as she was only 15, but what she didn't know was that her father needed money to get her mother a life saving operation. Desperate and broke her father was at the end of his rope. He knew his only hope was to give his daughter a secure future. How he didn't know, until he found that online ad.
Her father arranged a marriage with a man looking for a wife for his ugly son Shrek. He didn't feel right about it, but knew that with this man's money she would be well taken care of, also this man agreed to pay for her mother's operation.
Fiona's mother died a few months after the operation from complications. Fiona was devastated. Losing her mother was the worst thing that ever happened to her or so she thought. At her mother's funeral, Fiona's father introduced her to Shrek's father. She had no idea who this man was, but she remembered he had looked her over like a prize sow at a fair. It creeped her out.
When Fiona turned sixteen she found her father dead in his bedroom by suicide. She found a note by his body. She picked it up and read it.
My dearest Fiona,
I had to leave you, because I can't go on without your mother. I am tired and long to join her. I hope you won't hate me, but I want you to know that I have made sure your future is secure. A man named Stan will be coming for you after my burial, and you should go with him. He will explain everything. Remember how much we loved you, and always wanted you to have the best. You always made us proud and you always will. You are beautiful inside and out. Good bye my darling. Please don't grieve for me. When you think of me smile, knowing that your mother and I will be walking hand in hand and heart to heart forever.
Good bye my precious pearl. I always want you to smile no matter what. Be strong and proud always of who you are, because I always will be.
Love,
Your Father.
Fiona had cried for hours after that until Barthus came to pick her up. He explained how her father had arranged a marriage between his son and her, and she would be living with Shrek until she was 18 when they would be married. Being only 15 and not wanting to go against her father's wishes she went with Barthus.

Fiona met Shrek for the first time and was repulsed by his looks. He looked hideous and didn't have the best manners.
To make matters worse Fiona overheard Shrek tell her father that he wouldn't be hooked up to that disfigured green blob. Even though she felt the same, it still hurt to hear him say so.
Six months later here she lived, and her only joy was the two pets Shrek's dad Stan bought her and her music. She was just 16 and yet her future was mapped out for her living with a man she didn't love, and who made her skin crawl. Oh father how could you do this to me? She cried out in silent anguish.
Bitterness flooded her heart. To be born a freak, lose your parents at a tender age, one to illness and one to suicide and be betrothed to someone uglier than her was more than she could bear. She didn't know what she would do, but she hoped and prayed she would find a way out. Her music was her only solace, and if she became good enough that might be her ticket out. Who was she kidding she thought, with her looks how could she become a famous pianist? She didn't know, the only thing she did know was if her music failed her, then there was only one way out. She would follow her father and mother and be reunited with them forever.
